Let’s talk about first things first.
One thing any good author should get his or her hands on is a subscription of the Chicago Manual of Style. Almost every publisher (unless you’re publishing a medical article or book) uses this well respected tome.
Actually, you can purchase the physical book. It’s now in its 16th edition. Or you can just subscribe to the online service, which is available at http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/subscription_opts.html. It’s $35 per year, well worth the investment. They even offer a $5 discount per year if you purchase a two-year prescription.
If you have a story to tell but are not so savvy with syntax, grammar and spelling, Chicago Manual of Style can help. And it’s beneficial to have because when your editor returns your manuscripts with references to the Chicago Manual of Style, you’ll know what’s been mentioned.
